In the ordinary use of lubricants, sometimes we will find that there will be foam in the lubricants used. The details of these lubricating oils will often be ignored, but if the oil foam is not paid attention to, it will cause great harm.
At atmospheric pressure, mineral oil dissolves about 9% of its volume of air. The solubility of air in lubricating oil increases with the increase of pressure. When the pressure decreases, the excess air will be rapidly separated from the oil to achieve a new balance. But when the separated air is surrounded by oil film and the oil film is not easy to crack, foam will form. This is due to the foam part in the lubricating oil of internal combustion engines.
When lubricating oil is used to produce foam and is difficult to disappear, it usually has the following hazards:
(1) Increase the volume of lubricating oil, spill oil tank, cause oil loss or bring fire and other unsafe causes;
(2) Increase the compressibility of lubricating oil, hinder the oil supply of oil pump, reduce the oil supply pressure, cause insufficient oil supply, affect lubrication and cause wear or burnout of bearing bush;
(3) The large amount of air contained in the oil affects the cooling effect of lubricating oil and the heat dissipation effect of machinery;
(4) Increase the contact area between lubricating oil and air, and accelerate the oxidation and deterioration of oil products.
In order to understand the causes and hazards of lube oil foam, we can produce foam by lubricating oil so as to avoid foaming in the use of lubricants.
